All white

All white

What do weddings and tennis have in common? Do you yield? How about love and wearing white? Except in tennis wearing white is mandatory whereas at weddings its off limits to everyone except the bride. Feel free to email me with stories of you inadvertently wearing white to a friends wedding or with a tale of someone else wearing it to yours, The wearing white to a wedding debate never gets old.

While wearing white to a wedding maybe the last taboo, At this time of year wearing white is almost a given. We are mid holiday season and white linen has become a suitcase staple for our fortnight in the sun, Along with the suncream stains that white invites to the party (more on that later) But what about the other 52 weeks of the year? If we buy something white now is it still on the menu come September?

If you know anything about my fashion sensibilities you know I wouldn’t be promoting it if it wasn’t. I will be straight with you, white linen has a shorter spin on the fashion calendar, enjoy it from May to August, but its crumpled aesthetic starts to lose its charm in early September, The white linen shirts that had a laid back cool about them during sundowners can leave you looking like Captain Jack Sparrow in early autumn, Same applies to cotton seersucker and broidery Anglais, Love and wear them often, But when summer ends, Give them a good soak in baking soda, wash and store until spring has sprung again.

Everything else white can stay, White shirts and t-shirts, White trousers and jeans, especially wide and barrel legs. The trick with transitioning white from high summer is to exercise restraint, avoid soggy hems by wearing white on rainy days and by pairing it with an earthy muted palette, I like to imagine a 90s supermodels travel outfit, A roomy squashy suede bag in fawn, a light weight knit in cocoa paired with wide white jeans, bonus points for a minimal thong sandal, kitten heel or flat. You don’t need me to tell you that a white button down shirt is a great option, But how about a windbreaker? Since Miu Miu and The Row introduced the idea of a sporty jacket worn in a slick way I have spotted people pairing their sports inspired jackets with wide white trousers and it looks instantly fresh. The jackets are worn as tops, lightweight technical fabrics with a funnel neck, While black and white is always a timeless combination, This works great with tonal shades against the white, Olive, Stone or charcoal.

Say I do to wearing white for longer. It looks Ace.
