Colour Block Shock

Colour Block Shock

In last weeks column I touched briefly upon how wearing bright colours can lift your mood, something we all need amid all the bad news and uncertainty.

So many people got in touch with me to say how they too have been reaching for more colourful clothes recently, it seems I am not the only one that feels cheered up by bright colours even if you’re not leaving the house.

Prior to the pandemic my winter uniform consisted of varying shades of black, with the occasional side helping of grey, I think I'm a little scarred by Cheryl Coles Gucci inspired colour blocking disaster which saw her pair purple Diane Von Furstenburg trousers with an orange frilly top and turquoise belt to the X-Factor Auditions in LA in 2011, rumour has it she was fired by Simon Cowell for it, which is rough considering his penchant for ridiculous trousers.

Ten years is a long time in fashion and colour blocking (and Cheryls dress sense) has come a long way since then, colour blocking 2020 is a little more sophisticated, ever since Jacquemus featured a hot pink over-sized blazer in their Spring Summer runway show, on their hot pink carpet, I've been wondering how on earth I can introduce pink into to my own wardrobe in the absence of a Jacquemus budget.

While back in 2015 Pink was dubbed “Millennial Pink” its now to be known as “Political Pink” due to how frequently its worn by celebrity activists making it even more desirable, pink was to be THE colour for summer 2020, but as we know summer 2020 was a non-starter, so how can we make bright colours work for winter? Hot Pink, Tangerine Orange and Azure blue all looks amazing paired with Black, Grey and Camel so I'm officially on the look out for a Pink coat, orange beanie and Blue chunky knit to wear with my less gaudy staples of grey hoody and black leggings, maybe just not all at the same time, Sorry Cheryl.
