The sequel
“Some of the fashion was a bit out-there, and where was Reese Witherspoon?” my mums review of The Devil Wears Prada 2, While I can't help her with the absence of Ms Witherspoon I agree the fashion was a bit out there and I was thrilled to see it, I feel as though fashion has been swimming in a sea of beige and repetition, too many trends and not enough personal style, quiet luxury didn't help, it made make people too fearful to step out of their lane for fear of not looking “expensive” and the world turned beige. But fashion rule breakers are fighting back, busting out pieces that have been out in the cold for some time.
Let's start with white shoes, a casualty of the 80s white shoes have struggled to make a comeback, they were banished, labelled cheap and tacky but 90s minimalism has carved a path for them, narrow straps, thong style, mid heels and even wedges are back on the radar, no doubt helped along by the concept of the “wrong shoe” where by you add a shoe that contrasts with your outfit to create visual “tension” (the fashion buzz word of the moment) The key to making white shoes work is allowing them to be the one white piece of your outfit rather than matching them with white, so wearing with grey, navy, denim, and black separates and adding colourful accents.
Cord Necklaces. For a long time shunned and worn only by travelling students and art teachers they made their comeback in 2025, in 2026 long cord necklaces with polished pebbles have become mainstream but the best news is that after a long hiatus chunky necklaces are also back in the game, curated stacks of gold jewellery will always be there and rightly so, the more personalised the better, but to add colour, texture and interest a chunky necklace in resin, acrylic or even glass is a great idea, the more lecturer-esque the better.
Stirrup leggings yes thats right the same stirrup leggings you may have worn as a pre teenager in the 90s, in my case with a riding jacket (I didn't own or ride a horse - go figure) the type that hook under the arch of your foot. If you love them you have Jil Sander to thank for featuring them on the runway, If you hate them perhaps pedal pushers, or capri trousers as they have rebranded themselves, see Claudia Winklemans Bafta outfit on how to wear them for evening, think a tux & heels.
So what is waiting in the wings? How about Military / admiral jackets, Margo Robbie has already been spotted in a new season Alexander McQueen version so brace yourself for a comeback.
The fashion rule-breakers have spoken, it's time to be out-there.
