Meet Moira
There are dozens of fashion icons to have come out of films and tv shows,
from Annie Hall, Alexis Carrington, Holly Golightly and of course one of the biggest fashion inspirations of modern day, Sex & The City’s Carrie Bradshaw, and then all went quiet.
There were the odd highlights, the fashion in The Devil Wears Prada was titillating but with no memorable outfits, Mad Men, I remember the nipped in waists but i couldn't describe the frocks, and then along came Moira Rose.
The show, Schitts Creek is a Canadian Sitcom about a billionaire family gone broke, the cast, almost all unknowns apart from Eugene Levy and arguably star of the show, Catherine O’Hara, who plays Moira Rose. Playing an eccentric former soap-star who knows not what the words “casual” mean, the character explodes onto the screen in edgy monochrome tailoring and vertiginous heels wearing an array of wigs and a new style icon was born.
With British Heiress Daphne Guinness as inspiration, the attention to detail and expert layering of statement necklaces over geometric prints was a joy, but the best part was how her wardrobe told the story of how incredibly misplaced this outrageous character was in this sleepy town. Co-creator and co-star Dan Levy was heavily involved in the creation of Moira Rose’s wardrobe along side Emmy Nominated costume designer Debra Hansen, he describes how the wardrobe was the second most important part of the show after the script, as the clothes we wear say so much about who we are as people, and more importantly how we want people to see us.
Moira wasn't alone in her pursuit for sartorial nirvana, on-screen husband Johnny Rose wore only impeccable suits even when cleaning out the gutters, daughter Alexa in her Bo-ho inspired mini dresses and son David in his statement designer sweaters, the whole show is a dream for fashion junkies, and thats before you start on the funny, but heart-warming story telling and most realistic same-sex relationship ever depicted on television. Get acquainted with the Rose Family, you wont regret it.
