Mothballs

Mothballs

Night clubs are open, Dancing is officially legal, Life is back on. If you have been as cautious as i have about buying things “just in case” then you'll be as slightly panicked as i am about what to wear for the flurry of rescheduled events.

When shopping i don't follow trends as a rule, they fizzle too quickly, its not that i don't lust after trends, so far this summer my heads been turned by the myriad of Kelly Green shirts and terry towelling co-ords that Instagram shopping has to offer, not to mention the Raffia Prada bag that every single influencer from here to the equator appears to have been gifted, but i don't indulge my every whim, neither my budget, nor my house can accommodate such frivolity, plus it doesn't sit well with my intention to be less wasteful.

Of course if you hang on in there long enough, trends to come back around, noughties fashion is back with a vengeance, Juicy Couture, corsets and visible thongs are back (although this time around they're called whale tales which is a new term for me?)  correct me if I'm wrong but its unlikely even if you still own any of these items, you would want to wear them again now, but there are exceptions, the return of Sarah Jessica Parker as the most well paid newspaper columnist of all time, Ms Carrie Bradshaw in the reboot of Sex & The City, has brought back into focus some trend items you had to be very lucky to own the first time around, the Fendi Baguette bag, originally launched in 1997, the Baguette bag was one of the original “IT” bags and now over 20 years later, resale websites are reporting a huge spike in searches for the iconic shoulder bag, identified by its double FF logo clasp.

So how do we identify what trend items will come full circle? Is it only expensive designer styles? can cheaper items ever make their way back into the fashion nook after 20 years?  Is there such a thing as Vintage High Street? I think so, Vintage by definition is something that represents a previous era, so as long as it is in good condition, that Kate Moss for Topshop Dress, or Lanvin for H&M Jacket might be worth putting in mothballs for the future.
