Must Haven't
If I had bought into every trend that the little messages in my inbox had told me to this past week I would now be in receipt of among other things a pair of white kitten heel shoes, vintage fur coat, black & cream loafers, a leather trench coat, a full skirt in white, Adidas Sambas in at least 3 colours and a square buckled belt.
“Must Haves” but blink and you’ll miss them, or find yourself eyeballs deep in a mountain of clothes but with nothing to wear, trends move so quickly it is impossible and inadvisable to attempt to pick up on even half of them. This isn’t to say trends are bad, most things in your wardrobe will have formed part of a trend in the past, the problem with trends is they all seem so delicious in their shiny newness, so how best to sift through them and find the one for you?
My advice is to sit back, wait, there are no prizes for being first to a trend but the rewards for waiting are great, taking your sweet time will organically sift out the dead ends (cycling shorts) and fads (mob wife) trends that barely make it past the starting post, the trends created purely as click bait and the trends people try and resurrect (tunic dresses over leggings)
As well as biding your time, considering how trends fit in with your lifestyle might prevent any major regret purchases. I have touched before on how spending the majority of your clothes budget on the type of clothes you wear most of the time will make getting dressed so much easier, blowing your budget on a beautiful suede trench coat but then pulling on a tatty old rain coat for work 5 days a week doesn’t make any sense to me, your wardrobe isn’t a museum, it should be filled with things you love and wear.
So this season when you’re looking at trends take a minute and ask yourself questions, mine include what occasion will I wear this sheer skirt or are some wide leg cargo trousers a better option? Is head to toe white a good idea for me or should I hold out and go for olive green? Will I wear those kitten heels to work or would flat loafers be a better update?
What is it they say? Good style comes to those who wait, or something a bit like that
