Scandi-philes
Most of us carry around a mobile device that allows us to have the world at our fingertips, online shopping means we can ship anything from anywhere and there will be hundreds of fashion brands out there that you have never heard of let alone shopped from and yet what do we do when we want something new? Open the Zara App? Im not digging Zara out, they are at the top of their game when it comes to the high street, but it’s fast fashion and where possible I like to encourage people to step out of that cycle and explore new brands.
Copenhagen fashion week is the perfect time to explore new fashion, in my opinion this event leads the way, both in their approach to sustainability and in street style, nordic fashion is known for mixing comfort and practicality with individuality, they are fashion risk takers and self expression is encouraged, their aesthetic is so coveted the term “Scandinavian Style” has its own hashtag with 2.6 million posts.
You may already know some of the more Established Nordic brands such as Acne from Sweden and By Malene Birger from Denmark, the ubiquitous and much copied brand Ganni who made leopard print and buckled flats covetable and Rotate (Birger Christensen) whose sexy mini dresses have been joined by a more casual collection in recent seasons to match the zeitgeist. But what about Stine Goya with her vibrant prints and bold colours and Cecilie Bahnsen whose made feminine frills feel modern again.
The beauty about Nordic brands is their collections are always unpredictable, the over all aesthetic does have a running theme, irreverent, oversized and ever so slightly off the wall, rarely do they fail to kick off a trend that doesn’t go international, suiting was big in the Autumn 24 shows so look out for that.
Understandably for a region that gets a lot of inclement weather they are big on outerwear and cold weather accessories, coats, snoods, beanies, caps, socks, tights, boots, umbrellas, scarves, you name it they layer it up, that layering is mimicked by the street style stars outside the shows too, if you are looking for inspiration for all-weather looks, Copenhagen Fashion Week is for you.
I don’t have enough room to list them all, but check out Wood Wood for knitwear, Dear Denier for socks you show off, Baum und Pfedgarden for interesting separates, their blown up gingham for spring is amazing, Stand Studio for talking point accessories and Won Hundred for their ombre spring collection, you will never be stuck for where to shop again.
