Slow news day
Just when I thought it was a slow news week with the only high points being Summer Solstice and the mainstream acceptance of fisherman sandals, Fashion said Stop right there thank you very much (because fashion talks like a 90s girl band) and Grammy Award winning singer / song writer and now Creative Director for Louis Vuitton menswear, Pharell Williams launched his first ever collection for the Luxury House. In one fell swoop the Rap Artist derailed the Quiet Luxury trend with his pixelated camouflage and various takes on the brands iconic Damier (checkerboard) print.
While the collection was great, dynamic but wearable, the clothes were not the main attraction, Pharrel has strong fashion credentials thanks to his own label Billionaire Boys Club and various successful collabs but what this show reminded us is just how much clout he has, who else could shut down the centre of Paris for a fashion show come concert, have a mid-world tour Beyonce in attendance, have her husband Jay Z perform AND persuade a heavily pregnant Rihanna to sit front row, albeit arriving half way through, but what else would be expected from Bad Girl RiRI, it was a Spectacle, speaking of spectacles I expect to see cheap copies of the pearl encrusted Tiffany pair worn by Pharrel himself.
The fashion fun didn’t end there, no sooner had the American Royalty cleared off The Pont Neuf, it was time for the show that launched a thousand looks, Carrie & Co are back for hopefully for a less cringe inducing Season 2 of the Sex & The City sequel, And Just Like That.
Like or Loathe the plot line, for fashion enthusiasts of a certain age And Just Like That is unmissable, Spoiler Alert, Mr Big is Dead, so this time around there wasn’t the paparazzi frenzy to catch a glimpse of the cast on set, but there was enough to drip feed mega fans like myself.
What will Carrie Bradshaw, the fashion icon of my 20s wears in 2023? The costume designers have revealed she will rewear some of her existing wardrobe in a nod to sustainability and while I appreciate the sentiment, is it necessary in fiction?
Given Carries clothing budget was always ludicrous on a writers income, I would prefer they save the reality checks, I want pure escapism, not Carrie worrying about mortgage rates, as I pondered where would Carrie shop in 2023, I couldn’t help but wonder, where did she get those Gucci Birkenstocks?
