What ever happened to jeans and a nice top?

What ever happened to jeans and a nice top?

When did dressing up get so complicated? Remember when “jeans and a nice top” was the blueprint for dressing up? My theory is we left this look back in the late noughties with our skinny jeans because it became one dimensional, our jeans were too low and our tops too skimpy, but we’ve learned a lot since then, namely that spray on jeans are unflattering, uncomfortable and not a single shoe works with them but we’ve also learned about how proportion is the key to a great outfit.

Fans of Y2K fashion have been trying to bring back the skinny jean, I am going to stick my neck out and say I will never wear this fit again, even if my forever style icon Kate Moss still wears them, they’re not for me. Slim fit aficionados might feel differently. Perhaps there can be an evolution of skinny jeans, maybe if there is less stretch? Maybe if the ankle isn’t quite so narrow and if we decide not to pair them with clompy boots or maybe, just maybe we should leave them in the past.

Because we are no longer beholden to trends we shouldn’t feel the need to swing wildly from extreme fits, jeans don’t have to be super skinny or wide leg, plus the technology of denim has evolved, by adding just enough stretch we have learned the merits of a great straight leg jean and we know a relaxed structure doesn’t automatically mean casual, because in 2025 a towering heel isn’t the only option for evening, mid heels and flats can be just as chic.

Some of us have even embraced the barrel jean, which as a shape may appear scary, but when you realise they make an outfit instantly more modern and interesting they become a staple, I would always look for a high waisted style as that makes sure the barrel shape is in the right place, try tucking in your top, play with the proportion until the balance is right.

In order to bring the jeans and a nice top formula back into the fold we need to put into practise everything we have learned, Number 1. proportion is everything, its not about extremes, an oversized top does not require a slim jean, you can create balance with a simple tuck at the waist or by adding a belt.

Number 2. Choose one piece to keep things interesting, an asymmetric neckline, a top with great texture or if your top style is minimalist, go for a barrel fit jean.

3. Don’t be beholden to trends, embellished jeans are due to have their moment in the sun this year, that doesn’t mean your denim should sparkle, but if you want to relive your Destiny’s Child years, you do you boo.
