Lil' Shorty

Lil' Shorty

When was the last time you wore shorts? And I am not talking about the pair you pulled on over your swimsuit on the beach or the linen twinset you wear to breakfast at the hotel I am talking about wearing shorts as part of an actual outfit, in this country, be in a casual daytime look, work attire or evening styling, when did you last reach for a pair of shorts as a separate to build around? If the answer is you can't remember then it's been too long. Now before you roll your eyes and re-commit to never wearing shorts on home shores again, hear me out.

Shorts have been off the fashion radar for quite some time, confined to summer sports and holidays at best but then along came the Bermuda short 2.0. Bermuda in length and shape but the update being they don't (currently) come printed with 80s surf motifs. Fabric wise you can choose linen, poplin or a thicker cotton, opt for a smarter style complete with belt loops and a turn up or a more relaxed fit with elasticated waist and a looser fit leg. Where they sit on your waist will depend on your proportions, high waisted will make your legs appear longer but if you are short waisted you might want to wear them lower to balance things a little. Length wise, that's up to you, your personal preference and the shoe you plan to wear, all of these styles look amazing with a little heel, but equally good with a flat, a thong sandal, a suede moccasin or simple slip on.

Some might say Margo Robbie is responsible for the shorts resurgence, a little while back the Barbie beauty was spotted catching a flight in what sounds like a pretty underwhelming outfit, black loose fit silk dupion shorts and a matching long sleeve cotton top from Australian Brand Beare Park paired with Alaia mesh flats, she looked great and it caused a wave of copycats but the tide was already turning for shorts and it was only a matter of time before we all started to consider them again.

Of course Bermuda shorts are just the tip of the Iceberg, if you don't mind a short skirt then I dare you to give short shorts a whirl, before you go imagining prissy tailored styles allow me to point you in a more chilled direction, the vibe is short but loose, elasticated waist, sports inspired, piping and side stripes optional but welcome, as are lace trim but I am getting to the point of bored of lace trim the high street is saturated with polyester versions but I do love a silk short. Once you have chosen your shorts, choose your inspo, be it Margo or Zoe Kravitz the rest is simple, add a minimal heel, a lightweight t-shirt or tank and a blazer and you have instant cool girl styling.
