Spinning Around

Spinning Around

When I typed the words “Kylie Style” into Google, it didn't even occur to me that anyone other than Minogue would appear. As a caveat if Kylie Jenner / Kardashian is your favourite Kylie then it's unlikely the following column will appeal to you. If I say Kylie & Jason and you get a warm fuzzy feeling, read on.

Petite in stature, Antipodean born and an International Gay Icon Kylie Minogue along is one of those stars so famous they are known by a generation by only their first names. When you look up her defining style moments it's inevitable that a tiny pair of gold hot pants are first on the list, bought for 50p on a second hand stall and worn for 2010 music video for  “Spinning Around” with a Stella McCartney halter top they were the uniform to one of her many career reinventions, quickly followed by the hooded catsuit for the so catchy its annoying “Cant get you out of my head” Inspired by Grace Jones and spawning a zillion real life copy-cats white jumpsuits with hoods, split legs slashed to the naval, If you know, you know.

Kylie's most recognisable looks might be from her music videos and tour outfits, Her 2005 Tour Showgirl bring the most memorable and undoubtedly being the costume inspiration for Taylor Swift's last tour. The recent Netflix Kylie Documentary gave me the opportunity to walk down memory lane and watch her style evolve right from “girl next door” in soap opera Neighbours, through her relationship with rockstar Michael Hutchence when her style became a little more edgy, through to her grown-up pop star looks of the early 00s styled by her long time collaborator William Baker.

Kylie has been dressed by everyone from John Galliano to Alexander McQueen and Karl Lagerfeld so is no stranger to high fashion and like Madonna is a master of reintroducing herself to the world looking entirely relevant, her video for “Come into my world” set on the streets of Paris  has recently been recreated by Chanel starring Margot Robbie and went instantly Viral,  So it was no surprise when she popped up as the face of the AW26 JW Anderson fashion campaign, having had a “meet-cute” with Jonathan Anderson (of Loewe and now Christian Dior) on the Met Gala dance floor, It's Kylie's way of telling us her 2026 iteration has arrived.

After completing my deep dive on Kylie Minogue's 35 plus career I have decided that she is massively underrated in the fashion stakes, so many of her off-stage looks are iconic, at 5ft nothing she doesnt have supermodel height on her side but she never looks short of amazing, she works with her tiny proportions and her clothes are always tailored to perfection, not once have i seen her look swamped even when wearing a gown or a suit. I've noticed she has a good eye for a flattering neckline, making good use of sweetheart shapes and cups in bustier tops, as to be expected she is an expert at party dresses and like any petite woman knows the value of a high heel, Looking anywhere near as good as Kylie age 57? I should be so lucky….
