The pearl of trends

The pearl of trends

In a sea of trends I have found the seasons pearl, I’m reluctant to even call it a trend because a trend implies its to be short lived, shelved after a number of weeks but this is too good, too chic, too much of a good thing to be written off as a seasonal trend, so I’m elevating its status to wardrobe staple. Whilst this may be an early call, I’m calling it, because wardrobe staples need redefining anyway, realistically how many white shirts and trench coats can one woman wear? Wardrobe staples should be things you reach for regularly yes, but they should also be made up from pieces that elevate your look in an instant.

The silk fringed scarf is my pearl, I say silk but it could be satin, I say fringe but it could also be tassels and as for colour for night now I would say champagne (thats ivory to any one not being preposterous) but black and brown are equally superb and may even be more useful while if you are already onto the trend and want to expand your repertoire should be more creative and look for prints and embellishment, a quick search for Dries Van Noten scarf will inspire you. The beauty of a fringed scarf is that it's not cowboy fringing, it's bohemian but glossy and the drama is difficult to resist.

Shape wise I would say the classic opera scarf is my favourite, about 1.5m long and about 20cm- 30cm wide with glossy tonal fringing or beaded fringe if you are really boujee on both ends. Because I always veer on the classic side I love them worn simply draped as a scarf with a blouse worn with lots of buttons left undone or a blazer and a sheer camisole and worn backwards with the tails down your back if you're wearing a dress. If you are looking for versatility and a little bit more fun, look for a triangle shape, embroidered, embellished and worn almost sarong-esque around the waist, on the waistline of a straight dress, over tonal or contrasting wide trousers and the longer the fringing the better.

The bonus of the fringed scarf is how relatively inexpensive in comparison to how much it can upgrade a simple look, if you already have one in your closet that you aren’t using to its full potential it's time to take it out of moth balls - even better if it’s from the silk and or from the 90s, you clever little hoarder you, let’s put that baby to work.
