Tread carefully with trends
Each to their own of course but I believe trends that require you to buy new clothes should be approached with caution, Thanks to the speed social media moves any investment you make could well be rendered obsolete before you even get your 4 wears (the dismally low number of times a recent survey found we wear each of our clothes on average) I personally would avoid anything that ends with the suffix ‘core’ as in norm-core, barbie-core, This season they're peddling fisherman-core and mermaid-core, By all means wear a cable knit and sequins but I would avoid getting caught up in this core nonsense.
Spotting seasonal trends used to be a sport of mine but when trends began spinning weekly in order to shift more fast fashion the shine came off, Now I watch trends but I put them through a huge sieve first, Get rid of the ridiculous and only keeping those that fit in with my own personal life and style, filter out any that leave me looking like I am wearing a costume or that will wind up in landfill for the next 200 years. I'm looking at you polyester.
The best trends are the ones you can create from your own wardrobe. Sometimes we need a reminder of what we own and a bit of encouragement (dare I say permission?) to wear long forgotten things or perhaps wear things we already own in a new way, With a different combination of pieces or even in an entirely different way, Worn open, backwards or layered., Then of course if you don’t own an item from a trend but you think it will enhance your wardrobe then it's time to shop, Buying the best version you can afford. Because if you are going to wear it on repeat it's worth buying better.
With that out of the way let me fill you in on some of the trends spotted at New York Fashion Week, Rather than the trends on the catwalk which won't be available in shops until Summer 2026 I have concentrated on the street style, Colours, fabrics and details that popped up so frequently that it's inevitable they will catch on.
Kicking off with the red wine trend, I call it so because every colour that falls under the spectrum has a red wine hue to match, plum, deep burgundy, berry and claret, Then Pinstripe, Nothing new here but if it aint broke? Layered belts worn 2 at a time, Bubble hems (on bomber jackets, not skirts) Suede jackets, shoes and bags, Pony hair accessories, Oversized clutches and East-West bags (that's rectangle on this side of the pond)
First things first, pull out the pieces you already own in your wardrobe that fit the bill and then wait. It's early in the season, Take your time and build a winter wardrobe that will last longer than any trend.
